VBSA Annual General Meeting & Special Resolution

The VBSA is the State Sporting Association (SSA) for Billiards and Snooker in Victoria. The State Government requires that all SSA's have a Quota of 40% Women on their Board. This requirement became effective on 1st July 2019.

After discussions with the State Government, we provided an undertaking to have our Rules (Constitution) amended at this year’s AGM, to come into line with their requirements.

A notice of Special Resolution was posted to the VBSA website 21 days ahead of the AGM allowing all members to view it in a public domain prior to casting their vote.   A vote was held passing the Special Resolution almost unanimously with only one voter abstaining.  The revised Rules can be viewed here http://www.vbsa.org.au/VBSA/vbsa_pol_proc.php

Prior to the 2019 AGM, we have targeted a number of women to join our Board adding appropriate qualifications and talent to enhance the performance of our Board.  Voters successfully installed four women to the Board.

The VBSA Board for 2019 consists of the following members:
Mr Paul Cosgriff             President
Dr Shelly Ames              Vice President
Mrs Sue Chigwidden      Treasurer
Mr David Chigwidden     Secretary
Ms Kathy Howden          Board Member
Ms Kim Ivett                   Board Member
Mr Manny Stefanou        Board Member

Assistants to the Board:
Mr Larry Eforgan              Director of Referees
Mr Mark Dunn                  Score Registrar
Mr Alec Spyrou                 Tournament Convener/Webmaster

There are a number of other willing participants:
Simon Fortune                  Pennant Fixturing
Kane Chigwidden              Assistant to the Board
David Pitt                           City Clubs delegate and game historian
Jason Colebrook               Billiards tournaments
Tony Fridman                    Junior Development
Rohan Liston                     I.T.

The Board would like to thank the outgoing members of the last Board for their dedication and hard work throughout their time on the Board and all contributions made over their time involved.

Kind regards

David Chigwidden
Secretary

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

This time of the year is always extremely crowded, and the VBSA is greatly appreciative of all the efforts that are made by so many of our Members. All these events would not be successful without the support that all of you show.

The Reventon International was a terrific success, and we are confident that all who attended found it a very enjoyable experience. The promotion of our Sponsors is extremely important for the health and strength of our great Sports.

Thank you to all the Members who will compete in the Reventon Classic this coming weekend. It is vital that the Classic is successful in its own right, as well as leading in to the Billiards Events. An enormous amount of work goes in to these Events, and we obviously enjoy seeing great players from Interstate, and Internationally.

World Billiards, and especially Jason Colebrook, have created a marvelous Festival for us here in June. And, in October, we are fortunate enough to have the 2019 World Billiards Championships here at the RACV, through the superb efforts of Warwick Loton, and his cohorts, especially David Pitt.

You have all done incredibly well, supporting the VBSA over these last weeks, with Pennant Finals, and so many Tournaments. Let’s thoroughly enjoy ourselves through these days of the Festival, and Remember: The 2019 Victorian State Snooker Championship is only a fortnight after the Billiards finishes! Please make sure you enter.

George Hoy has done a magnificent job in accepting all the Entries for so many Events. Please try to assist George as much as possible, and don’t place any extra pressure on him. The VBSA could not exist without the tireless endeavours of so many people.

Please consider how you may assist the VBSA as the State Sporting Association. We have to have more people involved, and working for the good of our Sports. Please consider how you might contribute, and provide assistance when there’s always so much “work” to be done!

When the World Billiards is on especially, we will need as many of our Members as possible to contribute their own physical support, and presence. Please consider how you might contribute, and support. When our Annual General Meeting is held, in a couple of months, it would be very satisfying to find a Membership base that all want to help, and contribute, in any way possible.

Please remember that your own health, and the health and well-being of your loved ones, comes first. Second, never imperil your own work situation. However, if you then have time, and the physical capability to contribute, then please do so!

The responsibilities incumbent on the VBSA have grown exponentially in the last 5 years. Please provide support for all the Board Members, and all who work so tirelessly for our Sports in Leadership roles.

Thank you for all that you have provided up to now. We now embrace a most exciting Future, and are grateful for all that you provide.

Cheers

Paul

VBSA's very own Marc Fridman was in the limelight again recently.  See what his local Mayor had to say.

"It was an absolutely fantastic night at the Sandringham Yacht Club last Wednesday saluting a group of wonderful young Baysiders at the Bayside Youth Awards. They are examples to all of us and we are so proud of each and every one of them. All in all it was a great night"  Cr Michael Heffernan, Mayor Bayside City Council

Marc received his award in the "Demonstrating creative excellence and leadership" category. Another great achievement, Marc.

Australian Under 21 Championships

Congratulations to Victoria's Matt Curwood & Marc Fridman who won the Australian Under 21 Snooker & Billiards titles respectively over this last weekend at the Brunswick Club.  Matt had a comfortable 5/0 win over Josh Burns (Tasmania), whilst Marc prevailed 321/248 over Josh Burns.  Marc was also a semi finalist in the snooker whilst Josh deserves great credit for being runner up in both disciplines.

Mention must be also made of Teah Raeburn (18) from Victoria & the oh so young, Lilly Meldrum (11) from Queenslan who fought out the Women's Under 21 final, with Teah going on to win 3/2.  And both also played in the Open Under 21s, with Lilly taking a frame in her matches.

Fabulous effort from everyone and just for the record GO VICS!!

2018 VICTORIAN BILLIARDS & SNOOKER JUNIOR TITLES

The Titles were held at the Reventon Snooker Academy on 24th & 25th November, 2018.

Marc Fridman won back-to-back U18 snooker titles with the tournaments high break of 43. He recently returned from the World U18 titles in China and hopes to win back-to-back U18 Australian title in Albury and represent Australia at the 2019 Worlds.

At only 8 years old, Mia Macheda from the famous Ridley family, was the youngest competitor who showed amazing cueing skills.  Her determination to win was proof that she is a future champion. Mia is 2019 U12 Snooker runner up.

14-year-old Damian Thorp was a new face who had played 8-ball but not much snooker. Well he potted some great balls and provided some tough competition in the U15 section.

In U15, Sean Dempsey proved too strong winning 2019 U15 Snooker with some good solid play and tactics.  His brother, Ciaran, was runner up in the Snooker but showed great ability and skill to win the 2019 Vic U15 Billiards.

VBSA Junior Coordinator and Tournament Director, Tony Fridman, said he had never seen so much eagerness and determination to win by all competitors.  They all turned up 60 mins prior to start and were practicing. All parents should be very proud of the dedication shown, which some families travelling by train over 4 hours to get there and “motelled” it overnight. These children are our future champions

A big thank you to Reventon Snooker Academy for providing a fantastic venue and great quality tournament tables for this event.

The certified referees, Denis Coghlan and Jon Moss, who gave their time and professionalism, looked after all matches and deserve a big thankyou

Australian Juniors will be in Albury NSW in January 2019. We wish you all well.

See attached images of the players.

World Under 21 Championships Jinan China

Marc and Tony Fridman wish to thank everyone who provided sponsorship and support in helping Marc get to the Under 21 World Championships in mid July 2018.

Marc was able to watch and play against people of a world class standard (an 18 year old made a 147!!) and gain valuable knowledge on what is needed to advance to the next level.

A few matches were close and went down to the wire but Marc didn't manage to get over the line.  It was an invaluable learning experience and a very exciting time in the development of his snooker.  He is looking forward to more competition at this level.

Marc is being coached, practicing rigorously and will continue to play competition and tournaments to achieve success at a national and international level.  With support from all and continued passion and dedication from Marc, this can be achieved

Thank you.

Marc & Tony Fridman.

World Junior Snooker Championships

Marc Fridman, winner of the 2019 Australian U21 Billiards Championship (see picture), has been selected by the ABSC to represent Australia at the World Junior Snooker Championship in China in July 2019. China is also an affiliate of Q School.

Marc says "Attending the World Championship will help me with my aspiring goal to become a professional Snooker player, as I'll be playing the top players from throughout the world, challenging them and learning from them, and hopefully have a win.

Attending the Championships will also help me become wider known throughout the snooker community, where I'll be able to meet new people and make new friends who will not only help me grow in snooker but also grow as a more confident person.

At the championships there will also be world professional snooker coaches who I'll be able to get help from to improve my skills and who will teach me things I can take back home and practice and work on and can pass the things I have been shown to other aspiring snooker players. With this knowledge, I will also assist at the 2019 Victorian and Australian U18 titles  and help grow this sport, as I see the pleasure my Dad gets from helping the juniors and want to be part of that in the future."

Marc requires substantial funding to cover expenses so any help would be appreciated, acknowledged and is fully tax deductable.  Please contact his Dad, Tony, on 0414 534 575 if you can help.

IBSF World U18 & U21 Snooker Championships 2018

Victoria's own Marc Fridman has been selected to represent Australia at the 2018 IBSF World U18 & U21 Snooker Championships in Jinan, China from 2nd to 11th July.  Marc is the current Australian Under 18 Champion and was beaten in the penultimate round of the Australian Under 21 Championship.

Still just 16 years old, Marc has been accumulating some impressive results in both A Grade Pennant and recent Open Competitions.  He is the only junior playing in A Grade Pennant, reached the 3rd round of the Pacific International Snooker and was only narrowly beaten by the eventual winner, Aaron Mahoney, in the Reventon Classic.

The costs of attending the Worlds is not insignificant (+$6K) especially when, as a junior, he must be accompanied by an adult; in this case his Dad, Tony.  Some small amounts of funding have been procured, but the shortfall is still significant.  Any member or any business wanting to assist/sponsor Marc in this wonderful opportunity is urged to contact Tony Fridman on 0414 534 575.  The family would really appreciate your support.

2018 Victorian Junior Titles

The 2018 Victorian Junior Titles were held at the Reventon snooker academy last weekend, 25/26th November 2017.

Marc Fridman won back-to-back  U18 snooker title, defeating Jake Thompson, and Jake turned the tables on Marc to win back-to-back U18 billiards title.  Fantastic effort from both players.

The Victorian team playing in the Australia cup in Adelaide in January 2018 is

Marc Fridman U18 snooker (Victorian Champion)
    Mason Peters-Turner U18 billiards
    Sean Dempsey U15 snooker
Jack Green U15 billiards (Victorian Champion)
Ciaran Dempsey U12 snooker (Victorian Champion)

All these players showed their great playing ability throughout the tournament.

A special mention to 16yo Teah Raeburn who competed and played exceptionally well.  Teah will compete in the U18 Australian snooker girls and has the ability to win it.

Victoria has a very strong junior team that is very enthusiastic and capable.  The juniors are our future snooker champions so let's support them.

Many thanks to Jon Loughron for refereeing and assisting with the tournament.

And thanks to the parents who helped, some of whom travelled over 3 hours to get there.

Victorian State Junior Titles

The Victorian State Junior Titles were held at the Reventon Snooker Academy from 24th to 25th June and what a line-up of young talent!

The Under 18 Snooker winner was Marc Fridman with Jake Thompson runner up (pictured top right).  Congratulations and well-done Marc.  Jake thrashed Marc in the 1st frame and led all the way in the 2nd, but Marc cleared the table with a 35 break to win by one point.  Marc then won the next 3 frames straight to clinch the match and title.  Top quality snooker from both players; look at these breaks over 20.  Marc 38,35,34,25,24,24,24,23,23,22,21, Jake 31,28,27,24,20. Not bad for a 15 & 16 year olds.  Good luck at the Australian Titles.

The Under 18 Billiards winner Jake Thompson with Marc Fridman runner up. They both played well but Jake scored the important points to win the match.

The Under 15 Snooker & Billiards winner was Jack Green with Teah Raeburn, the only female contestant runner up.  Congratulations to Jack on winning and will go well in Adelaide.  Teah (pictured bottom right) continually made 8 & 10's in the billiards, has good straight cueing showing she has the potential to win the Under 18 Australian Ladies this year.

The Under 12 Snooker winner was Sean Dempsey with his younger brother, Ciaran runner up (pictured bottom left).  What good players these two are! Referee Dennis Coughlan stated that balls were potted nearly every time they walked to the table and what could have been a 2-hour match was over in about 45 minutes. Sean is 11 years old & Ciaran only 9.

Victoria is going for a hat trick in the Australian Teams Challenge.  We have won this the last 2 years and we have a very strong team again this year.  The team, as pictured top left, is Jake Thompson, Teah Raeburn, Jack Green and Marc Fridman.  Other Victorians competing at the Australian Open are Lochlan Courtenay, Isabella Di Gioirgio and Mason Peters-Turner.  We wish you all well.  GO VICS.

Thanks to Dennis Coughlan for refereeing and to the Reventon Snooker Academy for providing such fantastic conditions for snooker competition in Victoria.

Star of Screen & Table

12 year old Queensland sensation, Jayden Dinga, is proving a big hit not just on the table but also on the little screen.

Jayden is the current U12 national snooker champ, U12 national 8 ball champ, U12 QLD snooker champ, U15 QLD snooker champ, U15 QLD billiards champ and U18 QLD billiards runner up.  That's impressive in anyone's book.

A new TV Show "Little Big Shots" is coming to Channel 7 soon and Jayden is filming a segment for the show this week. He'll be doing some pool trick shots and talking about his snooker. What an amazing opportunity for this young man.  See https://vimeo.com/213039946 for a preview of the show.

I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more from Jayden in the years ahead.

PS  And well done to our very own Kim Ivett for facilitating the above.  She's always on the lookout for a good story that will promote our game.  Great work Kim.

John McKay Australian U/21 Snooker and Billiards

The John McKay Australian U/21 Snooker and Billiards Championships held at the Brunswick club over the past few days, although spoiled by the very low number of entrants, left us in no doubt of who are the outstanding players of their generation. Cale Barratt must now be considered the leading light as the best Snooker and all round player with Josh Burns as the stand out Billiards player.

Neil Brown was on hand to referee the final of the Billiards, inevitably contested by Josh and Cale. The game was in the hands of Cale, the defending champion of 2016, until a timely 102 break by Josh got him over the line by 1 point.

Saturday was the time for the final stages of the Snooker tournament with the semi-finals won by Cale by 4 frames to 1 over Ivan Li from Queensland and Jayme White getting up by the same score line at the expense of Josh Burns.

The final was supervised by Jon Moss getting a final very early in his career as a referee and proving by his very good performance that the confidence shown in him is not misplaced.

The form shown by Cale throughout the tournament did not let him down for the final and although Jayme put up a valiant fight and is certainly a name for the future, it was Cale who ran out an easy winner taking the final by 5 frames to 1 and recording breaks of 46, 76 and 61 along the way.

Were held at the Brunswick club and was a great success. I was impressed with the quality of snooker and performance by all age groups showing that they will be our future stars. Jordy peart was the only female entrant, her ability in long potting won her frames and the Dempsey brothers were always potting balls even though they could hardly see over the table

Jon  it was your input that helped make it successful. Thanks to Tania for getting us up & going. Cheers to Dennis & Jon for being officials and keeping all In order

George Spiteri ran a raffle for a framed piece of the Goldfields winners. Thanks George a great cause!

A nice bloke from Qld by the name of Dan Johnston won the raffle. He was landing at Gold Coast airport when we actually drew the raffle. Will be getting the piece to his son who is based in Melbourne.

Exactly $1200 was raised, selling tickets to punters from as far as New Zealand!

2015 Vic Junior Championship

2015 Victorian Junior Championship was held at  Brunswick on Saturday 16th of May.

First of all I wish to thank all of the attending parents, for assisting with refereeing duties and a special thanks to our National coach Paul Thomerson.

Paul refereed from kick off through to 2:00pm and when not at the table he assisted the juniors’ with some very encouraging and thoughtful advice.

Thankyou must also go to the Brunswick Club for the use of their facilities.

Tania Ahmet did a great job as Tournament Director, the day ran very smoothly and the draw was very well organized. The round robin was best of 3 and the finals best of 5. It also was also greatly appreciated that Tania refereed during the day when required. Tania well done on a great job !!!

I wish to congratulate all of the junior participants on their behavior and was impressed by their shot selection, skill level and sportsmanship.

The future looks good for Victorian Snooker, although we still need to increase the numbers in our junior ranks.

Jack Green deserves a special mention as he was the only Under 12 participant and stepped up to compete in the under 15 Tournament, he played vey well. For such a young man his long potting was impressive, he also has a very good demeanor and attitude while at the table. The same can be said of the older brother Cameron Green, they both look to become very talented senior players.

 2015 Victorian Junior Tournament Entrants:

Matthew Curwood, Arthur Lin, Jake Thompson, Devlin Praeger, Marc Fridman, Cameron Green & Jack Green

The U15 Finalist were Marc Fridman & Jake Thompson. The first frame went down to the wire being decided on the pink and black. Marc then stepped his game up in the second frame, with a break of 32, and went onto win the final 3 - 0.

Congratulations Marc Fridamn - 2015 U15 Victorian State Champion

The U18 Finalist were Matthew Curwood & Arthur Lin. The first frame was a closely fought battle, until Arthur knocked in a solid 27 break to ensure the frame win. Arthur then stepped up his game to an awesome level, with a break of 100 in the second frame and to ensure the final win of 3 - 0 a very impressive break of 111 in the third frame. Well done Arthur.

2015 U21 Snooker and Billiards Championship

The 2015 U21 Championship was held at Cheltenham on the weekend. The snooker was held on the Saturday and the Billiards on the Sunday Snooker - The finalist were, Ryan Thomerson vs Callum Murphy & Adam Bleumink vs Emran Ali. Ryan and Adam won the Semi finals to progress to the Grand Final. Although Ryan had many high breaks throughout the day he stepped up in the grand final. The first frame went down to the wire then Ryan knocked in a break of 44 in the 2nd frame and 63 in the 3rd frame to win the tilte in three frames.

I would like to congratulate all players for thier consistent and competent skills over the day and thank all of the parents supporting the event.A special mention must go to Tony Fridman for his enthusiasm and help for the U21 tournament, Cheltenham for the use of the venue (all tables had been reclothed the just days before the tournament) and Denis Coghlan for performing the refree duties for the weekend

Billiards - Unfortunately there were only three paticipants for the Billiards on Sunday, Marc Fridman, Costa Zygorodimos & Emran Ali. Marc Fridman was knocked out in preliminary round, so the grand finalist were Costa & Emran. At the 45 minute mark things were very tight, only 7 points seperated them, then Emran's game stepped up and he started to scramble away. Costa came back at him towards the end, but the timer went off and Emran had a healthy lead. Congratulations to Emran on his win and to all participants.

2014 Under 21 Victorian Snooker Championship

Participants: Ryan Thomerson, Andrew Lang, Emran Ali, Marc Fridamn Callum Murphy & Arthur Lin.

This year’s under 21 competition was played at Cheltenham Snooker and Billiards Club. The number of entries was low with only 6 participants, but that was offset by the fact that the round-robin and finals could be completed in one day. The quality of the snooker by all of the participants was of a high standard, as can be seen by the number of high breaks.

It was a round-robin competition with two frames played in each round. Frames won and aggregate points scored decided the final four. After the round robin the top seeds, Ryan and Arthur, had 9 frames each and were only separated by 4 points on the aggregate score.

The Finalists: 1. Ryan Thomerson 2. Arthur Lin 3. Marc Fridman 4. Emran Ali.

During the Semi Finals, both Ryan and Arthur proved to be very tough to beat, but to their credit Marc and Emran played some excellent snooker to push the top seeds to play their best frames. Arthur had a break of 56 & 46 in his semi against Marc and Ryan was just too consistent for Emran to get a run at him.

So the top seeds made it through to the grand final (best of 5) with Ryan saving his best until last and knocking in breaks of 62 and 44 in the first two frames and going on to win the 2014 Victorian Under 21 Championship 3-0. Congratulations to Ryan, Arthur and to all of the competitors

The VBSA would like to thank Cheltenham Billiards and Snooker Club for once again making their venue available, Neil Allison for providing his services to referee the Semi-final and Grand-final, Michael D’Silva for his support and attendance, and Tony Fridman for his continued help, and support of the VBSA junior and Under 21 program.

Breaks

Ryan Thomerson: 57, 72, Grand Final 62,44

Arthur Lin:             47, 80, Semi Final   56,46

Marc Fridman:      42

Vic Juniors Under 15 & 18

Victorian Under 15 and under 18 championships were played at Cheltenham - Sunday 25/05/2014

Jake Thompson won both the under 15 and under 18 competition
Marc Fridman was runner up in both divisions.

Costa Zygorodimos  finished third in the Under 18 competition

All games were played in good spirit and the players called their own fouls, which was refreshing from such young players. Matches were very close and the fourth frame in the U18 final finished 62 all and was decided by a black respot. All players played high quality snooker and all proved to be very competent and with continuing coaching, practice and application will become very good players. Victorian Under 21 Snooker
the Victorian Under 21's was played on sunday at the AK8 Billiards lounge. Thankyou to Kevin Xu and his staff, a great venue.
After the round robin matches 4 players progressed to the Semis seeded as follows
1. Charlie Chafe
2. Ryan Thomerson
3. Adam Bleumink
4. Arthur Lin
Ryan Played Adam & quickly went into a 2 frame lead ,Adam won the 3rd frame to go 2/1 the fourth frame was a scrappy game which Ryan managed to win on the colours. to win the match 3/1 & go into the final
on the other table Charlie was off to a shaky start which gave young Arthur Lin confidence , And saw Arthur making breaks of 40 , 30 to go into a 2/0 lead
though Charlie thought hard in the 3rd frame Arthur was not missing many shots & ended up taking the frame & match with a good 50 break & progressing into his first u21s Vic final

The final was a one sided affair with Arthur finding the AK8 Star table very different to the tables played on earlier ,Ryan on the other hand quickly got into his stride with a 70 break in the first 43 in the second & anther 45 in the third frame to take the Title 3/0

Ryan Thomerson Has now won all Victorian titles u12.s, u15,s u18,s u21,s & he now has his sights on the mens to complete all the Victorian titles !
