2018 Victorian Junior Titles

The 2018 Victorian Junior Titles were held at the Reventon snooker academy last weekend, 25/26th November 2017.

Marc Fridman won back-to-back  U18 snooker title, defeating Jake Thompson, and Jake turned the tables on Marc to win back-to-back U18 billiards title.  Fantastic effort from both players.

The Victorian team playing in the Australia cup in Adelaide in January 2018 is

Marc Fridman U18 snooker (Victorian Champion)
    Mason Peters-Turner U18 billiards
    Sean Dempsey U15 snooker
Jack Green U15 billiards (Victorian Champion)
Ciaran Dempsey U12 snooker (Victorian Champion)

All these players showed their great playing ability throughout the tournament.

A special mention to 16yo Teah Raeburn who competed and played exceptionally well.  Teah will compete in the U18 Australian snooker girls and has the ability to win it.

Victoria has a very strong junior team that is very enthusiastic and capable.  The juniors are our future snooker champions so let's support them.

Many thanks to Jon Loughron for refereeing and assisting with the tournament.

And thanks to the parents who helped, some of whom travelled over 3 hours to get there.

Victorian State Junior Titles

The Victorian State Junior Titles were held at the Reventon Snooker Academy from 24th to 25th June and what a line-up of young talent!

The Under 18 Snooker winner was Marc Fridman with Jake Thompson runner up (pictured top right).  Congratulations and well-done Marc.  Jake thrashed Marc in the 1st frame and led all the way in the 2nd, but Marc cleared the table with a 35 break to win by one point.  Marc then won the next 3 frames straight to clinch the match and title.  Top quality snooker from both players; look at these breaks over 20.  Marc 38,35,34,25,24,24,24,23,23,22,21, Jake 31,28,27,24,20. Not bad for a 15 & 16 year olds.  Good luck at the Australian Titles.

The Under 18 Billiards winner Jake Thompson with Marc Fridman runner up. They both played well but Jake scored the important points to win the match.

The Under 15 Snooker & Billiards winner was Jack Green with Teah Raeburn, the only female contestant runner up.  Congratulations to Jack on winning and will go well in Adelaide.  Teah (pictured bottom right) continually made 8 & 10's in the billiards, has good straight cueing showing she has the potential to win the Under 18 Australian Ladies this year.

The Under 12 Snooker winner was Sean Dempsey with his younger brother, Ciaran runner up (pictured bottom left).  What good players these two are! Referee Dennis Coughlan stated that balls were potted nearly every time they walked to the table and what could have been a 2-hour match was over in about 45 minutes. Sean is 11 years old & Ciaran only 9.

Victoria is going for a hat trick in the Australian Teams Challenge.  We have won this the last 2 years and we have a very strong team again this year.  The team, as pictured top left, is Jake Thompson, Teah Raeburn, Jack Green and Marc Fridman.  Other Victorians competing at the Australian Open are Lochlan Courtenay, Isabella Di Gioirgio and Mason Peters-Turner.  We wish you all well.  GO VICS.

Thanks to Dennis Coughlan for refereeing and to the Reventon Snooker Academy for providing such fantastic conditions for snooker competition in Victoria.

Star of Screen & Table

12 year old Queensland sensation, Jayden Dinga, is proving a big hit not just on the table but also on the little screen.

Jayden is the current U12 national snooker champ, U12 national 8 ball champ, U12 QLD snooker champ, U15 QLD snooker champ, U15 QLD billiards champ and U18 QLD billiards runner up.  That's impressive in anyone's book.

A new TV Show "Little Big Shots" is coming to Channel 7 soon and Jayden is filming a segment for the show this week. He'll be doing some pool trick shots and talking about his snooker. What an amazing opportunity for this young man.  See for a preview of the show.

I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more from Jayden in the years ahead.

PS  And well done to our very own Kim Ivett for facilitating the above.  She's always on the lookout for a good story that will promote our game.  Great work Kim.

John McKay Australian U/21 Snooker and Billiards

The John McKay Australian U/21 Snooker and Billiards Championships held at the Brunswick club over the past few days, although spoiled by the very low number of entrants, left us in no doubt of who are the outstanding players of their generation. Cale Barratt must now be considered the leading light as the best Snooker and all round player with Josh Burns as the stand out Billiards player.

Neil Brown was on hand to referee the final of the Billiards, inevitably contested by Josh and Cale. The game was in the hands of Cale, the defending champion of 2016, until a timely 102 break by Josh got him over the line by 1 point.

Saturday was the time for the final stages of the Snooker tournament with the semi-finals won by Cale by 4 frames to 1 over Ivan Li from Queensland and Jayme White getting up by the same score line at the expense of Josh Burns.

The final was supervised by Jon Moss getting a final very early in his career as a referee and proving by his very good performance that the confidence shown in him is not misplaced.

The form shown by Cale throughout the tournament did not let him down for the final and although Jayme put up a valiant fight and is certainly a name for the future, it was Cale who ran out an easy winner taking the final by 5 frames to 1 and recording breaks of 46, 76 and 61 along the way.
