2018 Victorian Junior Titles

The 2018 Victorian Junior Titles were held at the Reventon snooker academy last weekend, 25/26th November 2017.

Marc Fridman won back-to-back  U18 snooker title, defeating Jake Thompson, and Jake turned the tables on Marc to win back-to-back U18 billiards title.  Fantastic effort from both players.

The Victorian team playing in the Australia cup in Adelaide in January 2018 is

Marc Fridman U18 snooker (Victorian Champion)
    Mason Peters-Turner U18 billiards
    Sean Dempsey U15 snooker
Jack Green U15 billiards (Victorian Champion)
Ciaran Dempsey U12 snooker (Victorian Champion)

All these players showed their great playing ability throughout the tournament.

A special mention to 16yo Teah Raeburn who competed and played exceptionally well.  Teah will compete in the U18 Australian snooker girls and has the ability to win it.

Victoria has a very strong junior team that is very enthusiastic and capable.  The juniors are our future snooker champions so let's support them.

Many thanks to Jon Loughron for refereeing and assisting with the tournament.

And thanks to the parents who helped, some of whom travelled over 3 hours to get there.

Tony Fridman - Tournament Director & Victorian Junior Co-ordinator and Team Manager.

Vale Terry Dodunski

Terry Dodunski, Dandenong Club and VBSA member, passed away at home on Friday 15 December 2017. Terry was a very accomplished B grade player who regularly entered tournaments with success in early rounds. His best run was at the Kings Cup, making the last 16 against Neil Robertson. It was a giant-slaying run to the last 16 earning him the nickname “Juggernaut” from tournament organiser Mal Gilbert. Terry withdrew from active competition and tournament play in recent years but maintained contact with his mates at the Dandenong Club, having a regular session on Saturday afternoons. He will be sadly missed by us.

The funeral service will be held on Fri 29 Dec, 12:00 pm at the Boyd Chapel, Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

Michael D’Silva
President, Dandenong Snooker Club

Governor of Victoria's Christmas Tree Launch

Mark & Cheri Dunn had the great pleasure of representing the VBSA at the launching of our new Patron, the Honourable Linda Dessau, AC, Governor of Victoria's Christmas Tree on Friday 15th December at Government House. The special VBSA tree ornament was also on display. And, as an added bonus, a tour of the magnificent Billiard Room was provided. What a treat. Not sure how you referees would handle a snooker game with those pockets though!!

Photos clockwise from top.  Mark & Cheri with The Governor; The Billiard Table (Alcocks John Roberts, installed 1876); Special billiards pocket; VBSA reps, Mark & Cheri; The Governor's Christmas Tree; (Centre) VBSA Tree Dcoration.

A Merry Xmas and a safe and prosperous 2018 to all from the VBSA Board. Thanks for your participation in 2017.

Welcome Ryan to the UK

CORRECTION - I got it wrong (fancy that) !!!!!!!!!

Ryan Thomerson recently arrived in the UK to pursue his career in snooker. Shortly after arrival in a practice session with Neil Robertson. Neil made a 149 (3rd Oct) and a 147 (5th Oct) !!!  The 149 - Neil broke off and snookered Ryan. Ryan attempted to come out of the snooker off 2 cushions to glance off the reds, missing the pack and leaving the white on the bulk cushion. Neil potted the brown in the middle as a free ball then opened the reds off the blue and went on to pot another 2 blues with the rest being blacks for a 149. Welcome to the UK Ryan !!!!

Reventon Final

Chris Christofi and his Reventon Group dropped a huge bombshell on snooker this weekend with his announcements at the conclusion of the Reventon Finals held at the Academy.

Huge increases in the prizes on offer, brand new tournaments with brand new concepts with huge benefits for the elite of our game right down to the grass roots at junior and new player levels.

The potential to attract overseas players next year is central to the concepts with the real possibility of reciprocal invitations for our players in their tournaments.

All this after a sensational weekend with the 10 best players nationwide competing for a $12,000 winner take all prize as well as two excellent and fun filled OneforSeven tournaments held concurrently just before the grand final on Sunday. In the words of Caroline Ruscitti, winner of the women's OneforSeven, "What a great time to be playing snooker". Johl Younger who won the men's event aslo commentated on the exciting things ahead in his thanks to Chris after the main event.

That event was of course the Grand Final between perrenial champion and V.B.S.A. life member, Steve Mifsud and young upstart and joker Ryan Thomerson.

It must be said that although Ryan seemed to get the rub of the green in more situations than Steve, his break building and especially his long potting was a joy to see and were the main contributors to his 6 frames to 3 victory.

He has grown into a fine young man and gentleman and will be an excellent Australian snooker ambassador as he takes up the challenge of a stint in England.

Detailed match and referee report now on the Referees Page.
