Vale – Costa Zygorodimos

Further to below, Costa's funeral will be held at Saint Anargiri Greek Orthodox Church, 85-87 Willesden Road, Oakleigh, at 10:00am on Thursday 29th March.

Thanks to Tony Fridman for the attached image of Costa, 2nd from left, in the victorious Victorian team at the Mitchells Australian Billiad & Snooker Championships.  Also shown are Jake Thompson, Marc Fridman, Arthur Lin & Jack Green (front).

.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

It is with great sadness to inform everyone of the passing of Costa Zygorodimos, aged just 22.

Costa began playing in the Churches and RSL competitions as a junior member.
In 2014 he participated in a winning snooker grand final side for Cheltenham in the RSL competition, alongside his father, George.

Costa enjoyed playing billiards, and was always respectful and kind-natured to his opponents and around the supper table.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his father George, his mother Vass, his sister Athena, and all of his friends and family.

2018 Oceania Snooker Championship

Victorian player, Adrian Ridley, has swept all before him to take out the 2018 Oceania Snooker title that concluded at Mounties on 17th March.  In a seesawing final, where either player may have scraped in, Adrain saw off Dennis Paul 6/4 to take the title.  Congratulations Adrian.

Andrews/Atkins Shield - 2018

The 46th annual Andrews/Atkins Shield has been run & won by Victoria in grand fashion.

The camaraderie at Brunswick was quite exceptional, with Ron’s widow, Leanne, in attendance for the first time since his passing.

Our Tasmanian visitors were full of praise for the this years's staging.  Well done to Ron Cole & his cohorts in conducting this very popular event.  All the Members of the Victorian Team wanted to have their gratitude conveyed to the VBSA Board.

See attachment for the detailed results.

COMMUNICATION, SPONSORSHIP AND APPLICATION

VBSA BOARD STATEMENT

The Board has been reviewing a range of VBSA practices, and wishes to inform the Membership of several initiatives.

COMMUNICATION PREFERENCES
The Board has, for some months, been working on ways to improve its ability to convey messages to its Members. We knew that some Members weren't receiving our messages in a format that they would see or read. Anecdotal feedback indicated that some Members wanted to receive messages as emails but not as text messages; others wanted to receive texts but not emails; others wanted to be informed primarily through social media...

Several questions in the recent VBSA Survey addressed this issue. Based on a careful analysis of Survey responses, the Board is going to focus of 4 channels for delivering information to Members:
- The VBSA website
- The VBSA Facebook page
- Emails
- Text messages
The Survey indicated that almost all Members wish to be informed about VBSA matters through one or more of these channels. In addition, the Board has resolved to ask Members to individually indicate how they would like to receive VBSA communications.

INCREASING SPONSORSHIP
In order to be able to offer more tournament prize-money and to be able to provide better services to Members, the Board has been looking at ways to increase sponsorship.

To this end, the Board has decided that, it future, it will be willing to offer some sponsors the opportunity to send marketing material directly to some VBSA Members.

The Board will only allow third party marketing material to be sent to those Members who advise the VBSA in writing that they are willing to receive such material.

A Member who agrees to receive this material may, at any time, change their mind and inform the VBSA that they no longer agree to receive such material. Your preferences will be respected.

This initiative will require the Board to amend its Privacy Policy.  This will be attended to ASAP.

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORMS
In accordance with our constitution, the "Rules of the VBSA", all those wishing to join the VBSA or to renew their Membership in 2018 will be required to submit a Membership Application Form.  In recent years, the Board has not enforced this Rule.

The annual Membership fee arrangements (ordinarily satisfied by paying your normal match fees for your first 4 pennant matches of the year) will not change.

The decision to re-introduce an application form was based on legal advice. This matter will be addressed further at the 2018 VBSA AGM.

The 2018 VBSA Membership Application Form asks you to indicate your communications preference, and to indicate whether you agree to receive third party marketing material.

The Membership Application Form is attached.

Team captains are requested to print off copies of the Form, and have their players complete and return the Form during the evening of their Round 1 pennant matches.

Completed Forms may be photographed and returned by email, or may be returned by conventional mail. Further details are contained on the Form.

We ask all those intending to play Season 1 pennant to ensure that your Membership Application is submitted by the end of the second week of competition (ie 11 March).

Message from the President

Welcome to the new Season, everyone! Thank you for all the support that’s been shown with so many team entries.

As the VBSA President, I wish to thank everybody who attended the Appeal Meeting just before Christmas. The outcome was that the four week suspension incurred by Mr. Andrew Bergman was confirmed, and applies for this new Season.

There has been a re-write of the By-Laws, and Mr. Larry Eforgan, as Director of Referees, has provided guidance on the manner in which all team members must show complete respect for the Referee in every game. I urge everyone to read, and understand, their responsibilities.  See 2018 Pennant Guidelines & Code of Ethics article below.

The only real place for discussing any Refereeing decision is at the Supper table. That is an opportunity for all of us to learn about different aspects of our great games.

The Rules of Billiards and Snooker specify that “Ungentlemanly Conduct” is not acceptable. The use of the four-letter word “f*ck” in any of its forms as a part of speech, from team members, constitutes Ungentlemanly Conduct (even from ladies).

A player (striker or non-striker) will immediately incur a “Warning” which will mean that any further infraction will mean “awarding of a frame” to the opponent in Snooker, and the “awarding of the game” to the opponent in Billiards. In Snooker, a second transgression not only has the frame awarded, but a Warning is provided that says the third transgression will mean the “awarding of the game” to the opponent.

Any team member, who transgresses as a spectator, shall also be “Warned”.  If they are to play competitively in the match, after the transgression, they will have been “Warned” for their game in that match.

The VBSA needs every member to be accountable for their own behaviour, and to ensure that all these procedures are properly implemented.

The VBSA wishes everybody to enjoy their involvement in all our activities for the year. Play well, and have fun, everybody!

Cheers

Paul Cosgriff
President VBSA

2018 Pennant Guidelines & Code of Ethics

http://absc.com.au/uploads/policies/code-of-ethics.pdf The 2018 pennant season 1 will be played subject to compliance with all the By-Laws as in all previous and future seasons.

It is well to remind all that the terms and conditions of being eligible to play in any VBSA sanctioned tournament includes compliance with these By-Laws which are binding on all players.

There are a few changes to the By-Laws applying to pennant that will apply in the 1st season of 2018 and may well become permanent after this first trial period.

Otherwise, all By-Laws will apply whether new or established, including the responsibility of all participants to abide by the decisions of the referee at all times. This applies to any player acting as the referee in any match regardless of that person having any accreditation as a qualified referee or not. This is not to say that a decision may not be questioned, it may, but in a respectful, calm manner which may not develop into an argument.

The VBSA Board will be asking all referees and acting referees to enforce all the official rules during these coming and future seasons, including those to be found in section 4 of the WPBSA rule book entitled ‘Players’, which demands that players be warned for ungentlemanly conduct and that the frame under way will be forfeit for any repeat offence, or that the match be forfeit if the seriousness warrants it. Ungentlemanly conduct includes arguments with the referee and audible swearing primarily but does not rule out other things which the referee may interpret as such.

Any referee acting in accordance with these rules will have the full backing of the Board.

The conditions outlined in the current ABSC Code of Ethics (LINKED here) will also apply to all tournaments and competitions run under the auspices of the VBSA.

The VBSA encourages healthy and positive discussion over supper of any issues, including disputes, that have arisen during matches.

As a last resort, I am always awake until late on pennant playing evenings and would not be put out by a text or a phone call if a rules dispute cannot be resolved. Having said that, I must remind all that decisions of judgement, i.e. Section 3, Rule 14, cannot be definitively resolved without being an eyewitness.

The few and experimental or permanent changes proposed for the upcoming season mentioned earlier are: -
1. The dress regulations for all finals matches will now not include the option of a sleeveless vest. The dress combinations open to all players are either a waistcoat and a bow tie or one of either without the other.
2. A Grade will not be timed, as in previous years, but will play each match over 13 frames with the No. 1 players playing 4 frames. For all other grades the timings for finals matches will revert to the same conditions as the home and away matches. In addition, if a 13th and deciding frame is required, it will have a time limit of 30 mins. unless it is started before the completion of the 90 mins. allowed in which case any time remaining from the 90 will be added to the allocated 30 mins. The major change here is that each round of matches will have a maximum time allocation of 90 mins. not the 100 mins. previously allowed. All other pennant playing conditions will also apply, including the 10-point rule, for all grades except A grade.
