VBSA Junior News

Message from the President
As the President, I thank all of you for your efforts during this year. After the loss of 2020, I am only able to have admiration for all that you have endured during 2021.
For those of you who have been able to arrive at this point without becoming destitute, I would like to recommend two Charities to you:

In March this year we lost Adrian Lawson, a strong VBSA supporter in a number of Pennant Teams, and an extremely nice person to meet, and have as a fellow competitor. Having come to Melbourne, from Sydney, with his lovely wife, Megan, Adrian contributed to many people in a variety of ways.

Adrian was a fine Chef, a very capable Snooker player, a superb Spin Bowler in Cricket, and had obtained a Doctorate in Corporate and Criminal Law. All of us who knew him are poorer for Adrian’s passing. We convey sincere condolences to Megan, and all of Adrian’s family and friends.

We lost Adrian, far too early, as a result of his diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). This terrible scourge has afflicted Neale Daniher, and this Queen’s Birthday Monday (14/6), the AFL are having the “Big Freeze” at the MCG to raise funds to “Fight MND”.

For any of you - who remember Adrian so fondly - could I recommend to you that supporting these attempts to find a Cure for MND would be extremely appropriate? Thanks.

Next week, on Thursday (17/6), Chris Christofi, and his wife, Billie, will be joining in the “Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout”, and they are Ambassadors for that Event.

If you click on to their donation area through Reventon, every donation you make towards the cause of eliminating homelessness, will be matched by Chris and his company.

This is an extremely worthwhile cause, and the “doubling” offer makes any contribution that you are able to provide, even more significant.

Reventon, and Chris and Billie, have been fantastic supporters for the VBSA Members, and both Billiards and Snooker. We do not forget our supporters, and Sponsors, especially when all of us have had to go through such trying times.

Look after yourselves. Stay safe.

2021 Victorian Junior Championships

The 2021 Victorian Junior Championships were held today at Yarraville.

Unfortunately numbers were down with the decision of Noah Newman (U12) not to enter this year leaving just brother and sister combination Mia and Luca Macheda from Yarrawonga as the only U12s. The decision was made not to hold the U12s due to vast difference in experience and ability between the siblings. Young Mia has been selected as the U12 Victorian representative for the State team. We also lost U16 Mia Newman to soccer. Mia is captain of her soccer team this year and we wish her all the best, but as a very talented cueist for her age we certainly hope we haven’t lost her forever. COVID also played a role in losing a few youngsters, as they had no access to tables some lost interest whilst a few others now have weekend jobs.

Congratulations to all the juniors who did compete today. We had a couple of new lads playing - Denzel Barkho who has played 8 ball but had never played snooker or billiards before and young Shan Thilakarathna who at just 12 years old has had some experience on the big tables with his coach George Spiteri. Shan had some success with two match wins one in the U18 billiards round robin and one in the U16 snooker round robin. Denzel was given the Encouragement Award for the day and we hope we have piqued his interest in both billiards and snooker.

I’d like to commend their more experienced opponents Sean and Ciaran Dempsey who both encouraged the new lads and were very understanding and happy for the referees to explain some rules to Denzel and Shan during the matches.

Both Sean and Ciaran were too strong on the day and finished on top of the round robins. Consequently, it was a family affair with the brothers playing each other for the U16 & U18 snooker titles as well as the U18 billiards title. Sean had a convincing win in the billiards, but Ciaran put up a good fight in the U18 Snooker to lead Sean at times.  In the end though Sean came out in front to win his third title of the day. Congratulations to both Sean and Ciaran who will be representing Victoria at the Nationals coming up in late June.

Pictured are (LtoR) Denzel Barkho, Sean Dempsey, Ciaran Dempsey and Shan Thilakarathna.

Victorian U21 Billiards Championship

Congratulations to Marc Fridman who took out his second State Title for the weekend. Marc won the Victorian U21 Billiards Championship today at Brunswick.

After the round robin Marc had won all three of his matches but the other contenders, Sean Dempsey, Harry Copperwaite and Pruthvi Mistry were all on equal match wins. Hence, all the necessary calculations were done and Pruthvi was the clear winner of the three, having accumulated the most points and the best points for and against percentage as well as beating the next closest to him in the Round Robin. Congratulations to Pruthvi on making it to both the billiards and snooker grand finals.

Marc made an early break in the grand final of 38, along with several scores in the teens and from then on Pruthvi was playing catch up. Pruthvi put up a good fight keeping his composure and going for the correct billiards shots but Marc’s potting skills were just too good giving him a convincing win in the 90 minute final.

Once again, thanks to the Brunswick club, thank you to Larry Eforgan for being the Grand Final referee and thanks to Tony Fridman for his help during the day.

Victorian U21 Snooker Championship

Congratulations to Marc Fridman on winning the Victorian U21 Snooker Championship held at Brunswick today. Marc defeated Pruthvi Mistry 3-0 in the grand final and put in an impressive performance throughout the day losing just one frame for the day and making numerous breaks over 30 with a 62 being the highlight.

All the entrants, including newcomer Harry Copperwaite, showed some very good potting skills and young Sean Dempsey at just 15 years of age was very unlucky to miss out on a spot in the grand final. Sean and Pruthvi battled it out in the final round of the round robin, and with the scores level at 1-all, the third frame was decided on the black ball with Pruthvi prevailing to go through to the grand final.

I’d like to thank Denis and the Brunswick Club for hosting and for their hospitality. Tomorrow we are back there at 11am for the U21 Victorian Billiards Championship.

Shelly Ames, Tournament Director.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

This time of the year is always extremely crowded, and the VBSA is greatly appreciative of all the efforts that are made by so many of our Members. All these events would not be successful without the support that all of you show.

The Reventon International was a terrific success, and we are confident that all who attended found it a very enjoyable experience. The promotion of our Sponsors is extremely important for the health and strength of our great Sports.

Thank you to all the Members who will compete in the Reventon Classic this coming weekend. It is vital that the Classic is successful in its own right, as well as leading in to the Billiards Events. An enormous amount of work goes in to these Events, and we obviously enjoy seeing great players from Interstate, and Internationally.

World Billiards, and especially Jason Colebrook, have created a marvelous Festival for us here in June. And, in October, we are fortunate enough to have the 2019 World Billiards Championships here at the RACV, through the superb efforts of Warwick Loton, and his cohorts, especially David Pitt.

You have all done incredibly well, supporting the VBSA over these last weeks, with Pennant Finals, and so many Tournaments. Let’s thoroughly enjoy ourselves through these days of the Festival, and Remember: The 2019 Victorian State Snooker Championship is only a fortnight after the Billiards finishes! Please make sure you enter.

George Hoy has done a magnificent job in accepting all the Entries for so many Events. Please try to assist George as much as possible, and don’t place any extra pressure on him. The VBSA could not exist without the tireless endeavours of so many people.

Please consider how you may assist the VBSA as the State Sporting Association. We have to have more people involved, and working for the good of our Sports. Please consider how you might contribute, and provide assistance when there’s always so much “work” to be done!

When the World Billiards is on especially, we will need as many of our Members as possible to contribute their own physical support, and presence. Please consider how you might contribute, and support. When our Annual General Meeting is held, in a couple of months, it would be very satisfying to find a Membership base that all want to help, and contribute, in any way possible.

Please remember that your own health, and the health and well-being of your loved ones, comes first. Second, never imperil your own work situation. However, if you then have time, and the physical capability to contribute, then please do so!

The responsibilities incumbent on the VBSA have grown exponentially in the last 5 years. Please provide support for all the Board Members, and all who work so tirelessly for our Sports in Leadership roles.

Thank you for all that you have provided up to now. We now embrace a most exciting Future, and are grateful for all that you provide.

Cheers

Paul

Bayside Youth Awards - Marc Fridman

VBSA's very own Marc Fridman was in the limelight again recently.  See what his local Mayor had to say.

"It was an absolutely fantastic night at the Sandringham Yacht Club last Wednesday saluting a group of wonderful young Baysiders at the Bayside Youth Awards. They are examples to all of us and we are so proud of each and every one of them. All in all it was a great night"  Cr Michael Heffernan, Mayor Bayside City Council

Marc received his award in the "Demonstrating creative excellence and leadership" category. Another great achievement, Marc.

Australian Under 21 Championships

Congratulations to Victoria's Matt Curwood & Marc Fridman who won the Australian Under 21 Snooker & Billiards titles respectively over this last weekend at the Brunswick Club.  Matt had a comfortable 5/0 win over Josh Burns (Tasmania), whilst Marc prevailed 321/248 over Josh Burns.  Marc was also a semi finalist in the snooker whilst Josh deserves great credit for being runner up in both disciplines.

Mention must be also made of Teah Raeburn (18) from Victoria & the oh so young, Lilly Meldrum (11) from Queenslan who fought out the Women's Under 21 final, with Teah going on to win 3/2.  And both also played in the Open Under 21s, with Lilly taking a frame in her matches.

Fabulous effort from everyone and just for the record GO VICS!!

2018 VICTORIAN BILLIARDS & SNOOKER JUNIOR TITLES

The Titles were held at the Reventon Snooker Academy on 24th & 25th November, 2018.

Marc Fridman won back-to-back U18 snooker titles with the tournaments high break of 43. He recently returned from the World U18 titles in China and hopes to win back-to-back U18 Australian title in Albury and represent Australia at the 2019 Worlds.

At only 8 years old, Mia Macheda from the famous Ridley family, was the youngest competitor who showed amazing cueing skills.  Her determination to win was proof that she is a future champion. Mia is 2019 U12 Snooker runner up.

14-year-old Damian Thorp was a new face who had played 8-ball but not much snooker. Well he potted some great balls and provided some tough competition in the U15 section.

In U15, Sean Dempsey proved too strong winning 2019 U15 Snooker with some good solid play and tactics.  His brother, Ciaran, was runner up in the Snooker but showed great ability and skill to win the 2019 Vic U15 Billiards.

VBSA Junior Coordinator and Tournament Director, Tony Fridman, said he had never seen so much eagerness and determination to win by all competitors.  They all turned up 60 mins prior to start and were practicing. All parents should be very proud of the dedication shown, which some families travelling by train over 4 hours to get there and “motelled” it overnight. These children are our future champions

A big thank you to Reventon Snooker Academy for providing a fantastic venue and great quality tournament tables for this event.

The certified referees, Denis Coghlan and Jon Moss, who gave their time and professionalism, looked after all matches and deserve a big thankyou

Australian Juniors will be in Albury NSW in January 2019. We wish you all well.

See attached images of the players.

World Under 21 Championships Jinan China

Marc and Tony Fridman wish to thank everyone who provided sponsorship and support in helping Marc get to the Under 21 World Championships in mid July 2018.

Marc was able to watch and play against people of a world class standard (an 18 year old made a 147!!) and gain valuable knowledge on what is needed to advance to the next level.

A few matches were close and went down to the wire but Marc didn't manage to get over the line.  It was an invaluable learning experience and a very exciting time in the development of his snooker.  He is looking forward to more competition at this level.

Marc is being coached, practicing rigorously and will continue to play competition and tournaments to achieve success at a national and international level.  With support from all and continued passion and dedication from Marc, this can be achieved

Thank you.

Marc & Tony Fridman.

Changes to ABSC Anti-Doping Policy

The ABSC Anti-Doping Policy has been amended and is effective 10 August 2020.

The changes bring our sport in line with the establishment of Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) which has replaced the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) as the National Anti-Doping Organisation (NADO) in Australia from 1 July 2020.

The changes are:

• Replacing the words Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) with Sport Integrity Australia (SIA);
• Replacing Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) with the National Sports Tribunal (NST) as the first-instance hearing body for all athletes and the  Appeals Division of the NST for appeals for ‘non-international level’ athletes;
• Amending the definition of ‘National Level Athlete’ to introduce the Lower-Level Athlete category to allow greater flexibility in dealing with and sanctioning athletes below International or National level; and
• Removing the Anti-Doping Rule Violation Panel.

For more details on the changes, please see the attached Factsheet

Vale - Denis Coghlan

The VBSA Board, all Members and Players, are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Denis Coghlan earlier today from pneumonia (not the coronavirus).

Denis has been a magnificent stalwart for our sports, and especially our Juniors, for many years. As the host of National, International and World Billiards Championships, the VBSA has been blessed to have Denis involved, with his unbounded enthusiasm and unstinting support.

Denis has been the first person to make himself available for any Refereeing or Official responsibilities to support the VBSA. As the President, and often Tournament Director, for VBSA Events, I have always been delighted to have Denis attending at Tournaments.

Denis also attended as many events for the Juniors as possible, and his keen eye was able to identify talent, and potential, for all our Australian Juniors.

Camberwell Cuesports (ex-St Mary’s) and Burwood RSL have been extremely fortunate to have Denis acting as “the heart and soul” of both those Clubs. Denis displayed magnificent professionalism in Office Bearer positions for both Clubs, as well as the Over 55's Association, and he will be sorely missed.

All of us who have had Denis in our lives as a fellow Team-Member, Club-Member, Association Supporter, Referee and great Friend, will sorely miss his presence in our lives, and his professionalism, cheerfulness and enthusiastic cooperation.

Return to Play - Season 2
The following is subject to change with little notice dependent on the changing situation and the availability of venues.

The VBSA Board has decided, in conjunction with Sports & Recreation Victoria, the ABSC and relevant health authorities, to commence the Season 2 Pennant competition on Monday 20th July, 2020.  Season 1 has been abandoned with no team and individual awards to be made.  Pennant registration fees for the first 3 rounds of Season 1 will not be charged.

Note that all grades have been set at 4-man teams and that the provision of supper, including post match drinks, is banned to avoid compromising social distancing measures.

All members, team organisers & club managers are asked to start organising teams for entry into Season 2.  Team Entry can be made online by clicking on this LINK or click on the blue panel "Membership & Team Registration Forms" on the left of this page

Your attention is drawn to the Mandatory requirement for players, teams and Clubs to adhere to Federal/State Government guidelines, as well as those imposed by the VBSA with guidance by the ABSC.  Details of these are available in below post.  All Team Entries require sign off of your agreement to these requirements.  Player, team and Club expulsion for non-adherence, as well as government fines, will be the responsibility of the Clubs.

Clearly, the major issue will be the availability of venues to conduct competition.  It is hoped that the proposed relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions on 20th July will mean that sufficient venues are available.  Should the COVID-19 restrictions be reinstated resulting in venues not being available and indoor recreation again being banned, then the season start date will need to be postponed with a resulting shortening of the season.  Of course, some venues may not be available till later in the year irrespective of the relaxation of restrictions.  Bottom line is that nothing is “set in stone” but the Board will be making every effort to maximise the opportunity that now presents itself.

Pennant specific queries should be directed to Score Registrar, Mark Dunn

COVID-19 or policy specific queries should be directed to the VBSA Secretary, David Chigwidden

Health Warning

Given the current concerns about the spread of Coronavirus, the VBSA Board wishes to bring to the attention of its members the following.

Handshaking is something we do in our sport every time we meet our opponents and typically at the start and end a match. One of the precautions advised by Federal and State Health Authorities is to avoid contact such as handshaking.

Therefore, and in the best interests of all, the Boards position is that handshaking is no longer recommended while this global threat looms over us.

VBSA Annual General Meeting & Special Resolution

The VBSA is the State Sporting Association (SSA) for Billiards and Snooker in Victoria. The State Government requires that all SSA's have a Quota of 40% Women on their Board. This requirement became effective on 1st July 2019.

After discussions with the State Government, we provided an undertaking to have our Rules (Constitution) amended at this year’s AGM, to come into line with their requirements.

A notice of Special Resolution was posted to the VBSA website 21 days ahead of the AGM allowing all members to view it in a public domain prior to casting their vote.   A vote was held passing the Special Resolution almost unanimously with only one voter abstaining.  The revised Rules can be viewed here http://www.vbsa.org.au/VBSA/vbsa_pol_proc.php

Prior to the 2019 AGM, we have targeted a number of women to join our Board adding appropriate qualifications and talent to enhance the performance of our Board.  Voters successfully installed four women to the Board.

The VBSA Board for 2019 consists of the following members:
Mr Paul Cosgriff             President
Dr Shelly Ames              Vice President
Mrs Sue Chigwidden      Treasurer
Mr David Chigwidden     Secretary
Ms Kathy Howden          Board Member
Ms Kim Ivett                   Board Member
Mr Manny Stefanou        Board Member

Assistants to the Board:

World Junior Snooker Championships

Marc Fridman, winner of the 2019 Australian U21 Billiards Championship (see picture), has been selected by the ABSC to represent Australia at the World Junior Snooker Championship in China in July 2019. China is also an affiliate of Q School.

Marc says "Attending the World Championship will help me with my aspiring goal to become a professional Snooker player, as I'll be playing the top players from throughout the world, challenging them and learning from them, and hopefully have a win.

Attending the Championships will also help me become wider known throughout the snooker community, where I'll be able to meet new people and make new friends who will not only help me grow in snooker but also grow as a more confident person.

At the championships there will also be world professional snooker coaches who I'll be able to get help from to improve my skills and who will teach me things I can take back home and practice and work on and can pass the things I have been shown to other aspiring snooker players. With this knowledge, I will also assist at the 2019 Victorian and Australian U18 titles  and help grow this sport, as I see the pleasure my Dad gets from helping the juniors and want to be part of that in the future."

Marc requires substantial funding to cover expenses so any help would be appreciated, acknowledged and is fully tax deductable.  Please contact his Dad, Tony, on 0414 534 575 if you can help.

IBSF World U18 & U21 Snooker Championships 2018

Victoria's own Marc Fridman has been selected to represent Australia at the 2018 IBSF World U18 & U21 Snooker Championships in Jinan, China from 2nd to 11th July.  Marc is the current Australian Under 18 Champion and was beaten in the penultimate round of the Australian Under 21 Championship.

Still just 16 years old, Marc has been accumulating some impressive results in both A Grade Pennant and recent Open Competitions.  He is the only junior playing in A Grade Pennant, reached the 3rd round of the Pacific International Snooker and was only narrowly beaten by the eventual winner, Aaron Mahoney, in the Reventon Classic.

The costs of attending the Worlds is not insignificant (+$6K) especially when, as a junior, he must be accompanied by an adult; in this case his Dad, Tony.  Some small amounts of funding have been procured, but the shortfall is still significant.  Any member or any business wanting to assist/sponsor Marc in this wonderful opportunity is urged to contact Tony Fridman on 0414 534 575.  The family would really appreciate your support.

2018 Victorian Junior Titles

The 2018 Victorian Junior Titles were held at the Reventon snooker academy last weekend, 25/26th November 2017.

Marc Fridman won back-to-back  U18 snooker title, defeating Jake Thompson, and Jake turned the tables on Marc to win back-to-back U18 billiards title.  Fantastic effort from both players.

The Victorian team playing in the Australia cup in Adelaide in January 2018 is

Marc Fridman U18 snooker (Victorian Champion)
    Mason Peters-Turner U18 billiards
    Sean Dempsey U15 snooker
Jack Green U15 billiards (Victorian Champion)
Ciaran Dempsey U12 snooker (Victorian Champion)

All these players showed their great playing ability throughout the tournament.

A special mention to 16yo Teah Raeburn who competed and played exceptionally well.  Teah will compete in the U18 Australian snooker girls and has the ability to win it.

Victoria has a very strong junior team that is very enthusiastic and capable.  The juniors are our future snooker champions so let's support them.

Many thanks to Jon Loughron for refereeing and assisting with the tournament.

And thanks to the parents who helped, some of whom travelled over 3 hours to get there.
