2022 Pacific International Billiards

The Final of this year’s Pacific International Billiards, at the Yarraville Club’s Academy, provided one of the most amazing matches in living memory!

Presented in the photograph: Sourav Kothari (L), from India, was playing Rob Hall (R), from England, and the Final was Refereed by Garvin Gray (C), from Queensland.

The Final required the Winner to amass 1500 points, and there was a significant interval when the “leading player” had passed 750 total points, and concluded their “visit” to the table.

In this Championship Final, having amassed 4 century breaks by the Interval, Sourav was leading by 780 points to 223! In most sports, this would be considered an insurmountable lead, but with World-Class Billiards players  “No Lead Is Safe”!

After the interval, Rob Hall produced breaks of 177, 78 and 391 (Highest Break of the Championship!) to not only catch Sourav, but to “storm” to a slender lead!

Not to be outdone, Sourav provided his 5th Century-break of the Final, and was able to regain the lead, with the finishing line in sight.

With Rob trailing 1321 to 1422, Sourav was able to produce a break of “78 unfinished” to achieve the win, and be crowned “Champion”!

Rob Hall displayed tremendous fighting qualities to reach the lead in the latter stages of the contest. And Sourav showed incredible steadiness under pressure to finish out with a break of 78!

All who were fortunate to witness this “Titanic Struggle”, will long remember an enthralling contest between two Great Champions!

Congratulations to Sourav Kothari

2022 Victorian Juniors

The 2022 Victorian Juniors tournament took place on Saturday May 28th at the Brunswick Club.

There were a total of 10 entries and all competitors arrived at the venue with plenty of time to spare. It highlights their passion to play.

After the round robin stages, we were left with:-

The U18’s final contested between Sean Dempsey and Ciaran Dempsey which saw Sean the eventual winner.

The U16’s final contested between Ciaran Dempsey and Dion Romanos with Ciaran lifting the trophy.

The U12’s final where Advay Joshi defeated Mia Macheda.

It was a long day for all of the competitors but they all remained enthusiastic throughout the day and displayed excellent sporting qualities.

Congratulations to: -

Sean Dempsey (2022 Victorian Under 18 Champion)

Ciaran Dempsey (2022 Victorian Under 16 Champion)

Advay Joshi (2022 Victorian Under 12 Champion)

Well done to all competitors on the day. We hope to see you all back next year.

The tournament director was Tony Fridman who was ably assisted by Lynda and Marc Fridman – a real family affair.

Thanks Tony for an excellent tournament and also for all the work you did to get so many entries at short notice.

Victorian Women's Champion

This tournament was held on Saturday at the North Brighton Club.

A final total of 6 entrants played round robin in two grouops with the winners of each then contesting the semi finals against the opposite group runners up.

Pre tournament favourites Kathy Howden and Caroline Ruscitti ended up in one semi whilst Julie (Watson) McEwan played off against Shelly Ames in the other. Kathy proved just too good for Caroline, overcoming her opponent but only in the final frame. Julie had a slightly easier run to the main event in her semi final despite a very good showing from Shelly.

The end of a long day saw some exceptional snooker in the final with Kathy knocking in an excellent break of 51 early in the match. Julie held her nerve over this onslaught and was able to hold herself together to see out the match and claim the 2022 Championship by three frames to one.

The VBSA would like to thank the North Brighton Club and its members for giving up their venue for the day and for providing such excellent facilities. Thanks also to Jon Moss for coming in to referee a semi final after a morning stint at Brunswick helping out with the junior events and with very pressing commitments at home.

A tiring but rewarding and enjoyable day.

Season 2 Pennant Teams

Team Registration is now CLOSED for Season 2 of 2022.  Entries can be viewed HERE

The Season will commence on Monday 25th July.  Note that the season length will be determined by team numbers in each grade with the overriding focus being on having an even allotment of games i.e. having all teams play each other the same number of times.

Fixtures for both Monday and Wednesday Pennant have now been uploaded.  Every effort has been made to have equitable draws, but that is not always possible.

And a special mention to our new Club, Rack-Em-Up from Lilydale in C Willis North.  Their Villagers team used to play out of Masters.

Please contact the Score Registrar, Mark Dunn, on 0422 304 052 or e-mail for any queries.

Message from the President

All VBSA Members should be aware that we are hosting the 2022 Lance Pannell Snooker (followed by the 2 Billiards Events & the State Snooker), commencing on Saturday 11/6. Entries for the first 2 Events close this Friday 3/6.

Your Board, and the Assistants, have applied themselves assiduously, to be able to host this First Ranking Tournament in Victoria for more than 2 years. It may seem intimidating to return to Tournament play after such a hiatus, however, the Lance Pannell Snooker provides the best possible format for this occasion.

Players who are Ranked in the top 64 on the Australian Rankings have an Entry Fee of $125, however, for the rest of us - Adult $60 - Women, Juniors and Pensioners (only) $35. This is the greatest “value for money” you could ever have in a Ranking Snooker Tournament.

With a full Field of 96 Entrants, every player is allocated into a Group of 6 players. You are then able to play 5 (Best of 3) Matches in your Round-Robin Group on Saturday 11/6. The 16 Groups are allocated to 5 different Venues on the Saturday, and the top 2 Group Qualifiers will play in a knockout format on the Sunday, and beyond.

Accordingly, every VBSA Member should utilize the opportunity, this week, to Enter the 2022 Lance Pannell Snooker. If you are a Member of a Snooker Team this week, ensure that every Member of your Team, who is able to attend on Saturday 11/6, has recognized this opportunity, and determined their Entry possibility.

Saturday (11/6) will provide a wealth of enjoyment for everyone. Thank you.

Paul Cosgriff, President
